Identified the existing S3 backup infrastructure as an alternative migration path
Bypassed the blocked RDS snapshot route entirely using SQL dump files
Provisioned a fresh RDS MySQL instance in eu-west-1 with correct VPC and subnet configurations
Applied appropriate security group rules to match production network requirements
Created all three target schemas on the new instance prior to import
Downloaded and decompressed SQL dumps from S3 for each database
Applied fine-tuned MySQL client parameters with 1G packet size and extended timeouts
Used nohup for session-independent execution to eliminate SSH timeout risks
Ran post-import validation queries to confirm all schemas were intact
Verified production_EROS database was fully restored at 36.49 GB
Updated Magento env.php to redirect default and j2storage connections to the new endpoint
Executed Magento setup:upgrade, DI compile, static deploy, and cache flush
Verified full storefront and admin panel functionality at eros.ae and adm.eros.ae

The Challenge: When the Default Path Fails
When EROS, one of the UAE's most established consumer electronics retailers, needed to shift its entire Adobe Commerce (Magento) eCommerce infrastructure from AWS Bahrain to AWS Ireland, the clock was ticking. The migration had to be clean, fast, and flawless, with a live storefront and thousands of products on the line.
The plan was straightforward: use AWS's native RDS snapshot copy feature to replicate the production database across regions. But within the first hour, it became clear that it wasn't going to work. The snapshot migration path on the source instance was completely blocked, leaving no time to wait for a fix. Compounding the pressure was the sheer size of the task. The primary production database, production_EROS, weighed in at 36.49 GB. A long-running Magento cron job had been holding a metadata lock on a critical table for over five hours, and any misstep during cutover risked deadlocks, data corruption, or worse—a downed storefront.
The Pivot: S3 as the Migration Backbone
Rather than stalling, the team immediately pivoted. A quick audit revealed that the client already had up-to-date SQL dump files stored in their S3 bucket, a ready-made alternative that bypassed the broken RDS tooling entirely.
The approach was methodical. A new RDS MySQL instance was provisioned in eu-west-1 with the correct VPC, subnet groups, and security group configurations mirroring the production environment. All three target schemas—production_EROS, production_Storage, and prod_web—were created on the new instance before a single byte of data was moved.
The Execution: Precision at Scale
Importing 36.49 GB of production data is not a trivial operation. The team fine-tuned MySQL client parameters, setting packet size to 1G, extending connection timeouts, and running each import via nohup to ensure the process would survive any SSH session interruptions. Each database was downloaded, decompressed, and imported sequentially with full monitoring at every step.
The Cutover: Reconfiguring Magento for Ireland
With all three databases validated on the new instance, attention turned to the application layer. The Magento env.php was updated to redirect both the default and j2storage database connections to the new eu-west-1 RDS endpoint. This was followed by a full Magento deployment cycle, including setup:upgrade, DI compile, static content deploy, and cache flush, ensuring the application was fully aligned with its new infrastructure.
The Result: Live, Verified, and Intact
Post-cutover validation confirmed everything the team had worked toward. The live storefront at eros.ae and the admin panel at adm.eros.ae were both fully operational. All 36.49 GB of production_EROS data was intact. All three databases were present, verified, and serving the application without issue.
A migration that began with a critical blocker ended with zero data loss, zero downtime surprises, and a client whose store never missed a beat.
